A.P.I. Marine’s sensors are operating on the world’s first LNG propelled icebreaker!
DSME shipyard in the South Korean city of Geoje, has just unveiled the world’s first LNG icebreaking tanker. The vessel was ordered by the Russian shipping company SCF, and is the first in a series of 15 icebreaking tankers operating on the Yamal LNG project in the Kara Sea.
The LNG tank vessel is 299 meters long and 50 meters wide, it has a capacity to carry 170,000 cubic meters of liquefied gas, and can traverse ice with a thickness of up to 2.1 meters. The hull section is made of ultra-high strength special steel plates, which can withstand extreme polar temperatures of minus 52 degrees.
